Euregio "Karelia"

During the international seminar "EU borders - soft borders" that was hold in Joensuu (Finland) in January 1998 the Government of the Republic of Karelia presented the idea of the creation of euregio "Karelia", which later on was supported by the leaders of the Regional Councils of Finland --Northern Karelia, Kainuu and Nothern Ostrobothnia. In February 2000 the formation of euregio "Karelia" was confirmed by signing foundation documents, those determine principles and order of cooperation.

Euregio Karelia - general information

Euregio is an area formed by three Regional councils of Finland - Kainuu, Northern Karelia and Northern Ostrobothnia, and the Republic of Karelia of the Russian Federation.
The territory of Euregio Karelia is extending from the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea to the White Sea, and from the polar circle to Ladoga Lake. The most part of it is situated between 62 and 66 degrees of latitude and 24 and 34 degrees of longitude. The total area of the territory is about 263700 km', besides Karelia covers two-thirds of this area. The area of the Republic of Karelia is 180 500 km', which is equal to the half of the territory of Finland. The area of the Finnish part of the euregio is 83 167 km'. It will take you only a couple of hours to get from Kajaani to Kostomuksha through Vartius - Lyttaa cross-border point, as well as from Joensuu to Sortavala through Vartsila - Niirala cross-border point.
